12 JulDay Fourteen - The Campers go marching two by two to Ávila

After last night’s party extravaganza, the students were surprisingly quick to rise this morning. Being the last full day on camp, nobody wanted to miss a second of the action. Breakfast was bustling – the chatter of the campers filled the dining room as talk turned from the events of the previous night to the day ahead. What were we going to do to make the last day as memorable as possible?

With the smell of freshly applied sun lotion and bags full of food, we greeted Jesús (the driver) and loaded onto the bus but not before taking one last team photo in front of the camp banner. With everyone in their Midleton finery and Colgate smiles on show, it was a guaranteed winner.

45 minutes and a quick Q&A later, the famous walls of Ávila rose up in front of us on the horizon. The sight of 22 campers dressed in the same blue t-shirt and with the same orange backpack certainly drew attention. Every few steps, we had someone asking, where are you from? What are you doing here? Our first taste of what it must be like to be a Hollywood star and I must say, none of the students seemed to shy away from the attention.

First on our list of things to see was the Cathedral. Built into the walls, it really is an impressive piece of architecture. Then, it was time for our guided tour of the wall. Scaling the giant steps (people must have been reallyyyyy tall back in the day), students gathered to hear the history, secrets and tales that were kept by this world famous landmark. Some showed no fear and leaned far over the edge to get a good look down to the road, while others preferred to maintain a generously safe distance from the edge, for fear the nine hundred year old structure would fail them.

With the wall done and the sound of stomachs grumbling, it was time for a picnic in the park. You can really notice the difference in temperature between the city and the mountains and you could tell we weren’t used to it. As soon as eating had ceased, nearly everyone was found flat on the ground, having a mini-timeout to recuperate energy.

Next up, souvenir shopping. What was supposed to be a 20 minute activity turned into a 2 hour affair, as campers dove in and out of shops boasting of their purchases and of the gifts they would give to loved ones. Following one last walk around, an ice-cream stop and a game of Presi Presi on the sidewalk, it was back on the bus and back to base. En route, monitor Ale discovered the joys of the onboard microphone and created an embarrassment of laughter and smiles as he dared campers to reveal who they thought was the cutest boy or girl on camp.

Back at HQ and fresh from the shower, it was time for the last supper.  We had a special visitor in the form of one of the baby rabbits who had been feeling a little poorly. But with a little TLC and a quick wash, he was back in form. With everyone sitting next to their besties (“best friends” for those of you not down with the lingo) at dinner and food like no other, the atmosphere was electric. With the cups and cutlery cleared away, everyone gathered in the games room to watch the end of Over the Hedge but before pressing play, there was one final surprise. This time, it was for the monitors and teachers. The campers, in one swift move, hurried over and embraced the grown-ups in a giant group hug. With the rush of emotion, tears escaped from the eyes of a few.

Movie over, it’s time for one final night’s sleep in their bed from home. As I sit here typing, the campers are scurrying off to catch some winks knowing tomorrow will be an action packed day.

See you tomorrow parents!
